Kingdom of Maittar
[Work in Progress]
[Work in Progress]
Maittar (pronounced [MY-tarr], officially The Kingdom of Maittar, is a semi-absolute parliamentary monarchy nation located on the Maittar Island in north-central Auratus. While, the government structure is odd for the times, it has worked well for all of the nation’s existence. It contains 6 provincial states, known as provinces, and one protectorate each with limited autonomy based on old-world feudal lord/land values. The capital of Maittar and the Maittar Capital Province as well as the largest city, Maiystedd formerly Visporum, was founded in 1705 after the fall of the Antagat Empire and is the major population and commerce hub of the nation. Each province has its own capital, which acts as a regional economical and political seat for the throne. The provincial capitals are Comor (Protectorate of Comorria), Grónhem (Grónnar), Járosgham (Sotiwýra), Sammas (Notiwýra), Tobar (Botajánn), and Visparma (Edrosca). Kingdom of Maittar as it is known today was established in 1700 out of the ashes of the fallen Antagat Empire, which was the long reigning regime on the island.
The current head of state is His Royal Majesty King Ciristopar I. The Chancellor and head of the Special Council is Junas Borsyng.
HISTORY:
The island has been populated by a number of different tribal clans such as the Tobari, Skobir, Cuylds, Antagassians, and Maiyttari. After centuries of primal states and loosely organized tribal governments, the tribes eventually came together and formally settled the land as the Antagassian Empire in the late 1500s; however, due to increasing instability and violent uprisings against the oppressive Antagassian regime over the course of the next century, the Empire was overthrown in 1690 and the victory claimed by the Maiyttari. The final uprising was sparked in mid June of 1690 amid claims that Emperor Tibors III had instructed his soldiers to capture a couple dozen Maiyttari women and hang them from the castle at Visporum as a message to the people to stay in line. Three nights later a small council of tribesmen convened and unanimously decided that enough was enough and the Emperor had to go. Gorunn do Biyord (Gorunn the Bold), a revered warrior from years before, brought together an army of 5,000 angry Maiyttari men and women and stormed the Antagassian capital of Visporum. After a week of bloodshed and countless lives lost, they finally took the city and captured the Emperor. The council met once more and sentenced the Emperor to death for his transgressions against the people. With the ruling uncontested, the Emperor was executed and the Maiyttari sought to claim the land as their own and install a new, more fair ruling order. It took the first ten years after the uprising to successfully establish a lasting form of government.
The tribal council that had decided the early fate of Maittar convened for a final time to establish a ruling order. Many noble houses were established out of the tribes with their own footholds in the land, with the ruling house being the House of Bodur, a clan of lowborn Maiyttari. The nation was then renamed The Kingdom of Maittar in honor of the Maiyttari tribesmen that took the helm in leading the other tribes against the oppressors.
The first king, Wudulf Bodur[reigned 1700-1732], established the earliest set of Maittari Laws in 1712 and they have been enforced since then as theWUDULFA RECATSREGALI. There have only been minor amendments to the laws, but their overarching concept has remained relatively unaltered. After Wudulf's death in 1732 his son, Egaron, took the throne. Egaron's rule was short, only lasting 3 years. He was ousted in 1735 by the people for threatening war on neighboring nations if they would not fall under Maittari rule. Even though his acts were egregious, no wars erupted directly as a result. Fortunately, tranquility prevailed. Succeeding Egaron was his cousin, Wudulf II. Wudulf II managed to repair the uneasy relations with the previously threatened neighboring nations and established the most advanced trade routes of the time by commissioning one of the largest dedicated tradeports out the southeastern coast of Maittar called Hannisport in honor of his father, Hannis. The amount of people it took to complete construction on the port was unprecedented, but due to the repaired relationships with their neighboring states they were able to complete the colossal structure within only 5 years.
In 1745, Maittar was still reeling economically and spiritually from the crisis borne out their independence and subsequent regime overhaul 45 years earlier. The people were tired and broken and in the nation’s weakened state the Purgawipannori, a sect of pious nomadic priests, were allowed to settle in the capital and preach their sermons. Fifteen years after, in 1760, the government adopted the sermons and preachings of the Purgawipannori as the state religion.
Wudulf II's reign was very peaceful, however, there was much unrest civilly between the commoners and noble clans, which resulted in Orolduf the Elder, a high ranking priest and purgawipannor, being slain in the streets of Maiystedd. This led to Ovusa, a tactful and very intent priest as the acting head of the religious sect. This eventually led to a nationwide religious reform and schism within the Purgawipannori. This resulted in the formation of The Maittarian Orthodox Church, whose doctrines were based less strictly on the original purgawipannori texts and more on interpretation as it pertained to contemporary life. Wudulf II passed away from illness in 1786, and was succeeded by his 25-year-old grandson, Jurus, as all his sons had died from disease. Jurus was crowned King of Maittar that same year. As king, Jurus laid claim to previously uncharted lands to the west, but his claims were not ever seriously acknowledged. Subsequent to the dismissal of territorial pursuits, in 1801 Jurus turned his focus inward on Maittar and led an entire revamp of the Maittarian infrastructure and monarchy by establishing the first Special Council and installing the first Chancellor, Vassar Vorosaiy. He later founded the different Orders of Nobility, and, with his wife Elana of Gronnar, established a cadet branch of the House of Bodur, the House of Bodur-Gronna. He is responsible for the fundamental base of the current Maittarian governmental structure. For the next 80 years, Jurus managed to maintain a much-needed peaceful reign until his death in 1881 at age 120, making him the oldest and longest reigning king to date.
Jurus was succeeded by Halgard I (1881-1900).
In 1933, the Monarchy of Maittar signed into law the dominion of a constituent nation, Rosemy. The constituency was a direct result of periodic instability within that nation's borders. The relations throughout the years between Maittar and Rosemy have been a shining example of positive diplomatic relations. The King of Maittar, Ciristopar I, is in direct control of the nation legally, however he has allowed them to remain somewhat autonomous in order to preserve their heritage and culture. In order to maintain positive relations, the Maittarian government has installed a Knight-Governor in Rosemy to oversee the operations of the Rosemite government as well as ensure the preservation of shared values. The current Knight-Governor is Mallus Illsyng.
Geography
:The Kingdom of Maittar is split into 6 Provinces, The Capital Province, Botajánn, Grónnar, Edrosca, Notiwýra and Sotiwýra. Each province is headed by a Steddkef, a member of a noble house that had roots in the area before the provinces were established.
Government
Hereditary Semi-Absolute Monarchy
In Maittar, the kingdom is ruled first and foremost by the King. The King has a special council of advisers, which is led by the Chancellor. The Chancellor is hand-picked by the King, and the council's members are made up of the Vice-Chancellor and the leaders of each province (titled Steddkef/Steddkefina, "baron" in Maittarian Boduránn) as well as 3 additional members of the KKS (Knights of King's Scholars). While barons and baronesses inherit their duties, only members of the Knights of King's Scholars can be elected to the council and each council member may remain in their position until either they die, resign, or are forcibly removed by a 6-4 vote or direct request from the King.
