Anzino
Pampeago Region
The gleaming white snow graced the hills that surrounded the town of Anzino, which was home to around 8,000 people. The picturesque town seemed perfect on the outside but it's residents represented the many Visargians that had been failed by the policies of the "Salvation State" and it's authoritarian regime. Over 70% of the towns population existed on 1 or 2 pathetic meals a day. Families of 10, 20, 30 people were crowded into homes designed with 4 or 5 in mind. Those that had anything valuable had to pawn it off to feed their children and grandchildren. Despite working 14 or more hours a day the men of the town brought home a pittance. These were the people who desperately needed change but the chances of that were small.
Margherita Zellweger was only 56 years old but she was already a widow. She had lost her husband due to a heart attack from the stress and embarrassment of being unable to support his family. In total 13 people, including herself, resided inside her tiny 2 bedroom home. During the day she struggled to cope with the overflowing household she presided over. During the night she barely got a minute of sleep due to the constant kicking and squirming of her 4 young grandchildren who she shared a bed with. This was not the life she envisioned for herself and it certainly wasn't the life she was told would await her as a young girl when the regime promised it's young wealth and success.
On this particular day Margherita was taking advantage of a short reprieve from the drama of living with 12 other people whilst her daughters had taken her grandchildren out to play in the snow. She was sat on her sofa enjoying the warmth of the fire and sipping on a mug of tea. She picked up a newspaper belonging to her son-in-law and saw the front page reading "KUDU DECLARES WAR ON KITARJA!". Margherita never normally cared for the news of what was going on elsewhere, especially considering the struggles of her own that she faced. She just rolled her eyes and tossed the paper to the side but almost as if on cue there was a loud knock on the door.
Margherita lifted herself of the couch and walked over to the door, assuming it was her daughters and grandchildren. However, when she opened the door all she saw were 3 men in the traditional uniform of the army. "Hello Madam, is this the home of Leopold, Walther, and Mauro Zellweger" asked one of the men. "Y-yes. Why?" questioned Margherita. The man in uniform held out 3 letters with the official army seal on them. "They have been called up to serve their nation. They have 48 hours until they must report for duty" added the man. Margherita, her hands shaking, held out her hand and took the 3 letters. "Okay" is all she good reply. "Have a good day" the man said before he and his 2 colleagues went off to the next house. Margherita just shut the door and stood there, not in shock but in a sense of desperation.
